Vaal University of Technology

About Vaal University of Technology

Established in 2004 as Vaal University of Technology (VUT), it originated as a College of Advanced Technical Education (1966-1979) and was later known as Vaal Triangle Technikon (1979-2003).

As part of the transformation of the higher education sector in 2004, institutional restructuring reduced, through mergers and incorporations, the number of institutions of higher education and training in South Africa from 36 to 23. Vaal University of Technology was subsequently established under the Higher Education Act, No 101 of 1997.

Based in southern Gauteng, Vaal University of Technology draws students from all regions of the country as well as 25 other countries. It is one of the largest universities of technology in South Africa, with an annual enrolment of about 21 000 students. The University is well positioned to make a substantial contribution to the development of human capital in the southern Gauteng region, the country and the continent.

It has four faculties:

  • Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences
  • Faculty of Engineering and Technology
  • Faculty of Human Sciences
  • Faculty of Management Sciences.

VUT has four campuses. The Vanderbijlpark Campus is situated on 4.6 hectares of land with a state-of-the-art Library, lecture halls, laboratories, auditoriums and offices. Three satellite campuses extend the academic business of the university into Secunda andKempton Park (also in Gauteng) and Upington, in the Northern Cape. An extension to the main campus is located in Educity,Sebokeng, which is being developed into a Science and Technology Park and the seat of the southern Gauteng regional Innovation Hub. VUT is located in a highly industrialised area alongside major petro-chemical, steel, engineering, telecommunications and manufacturing companies. It is also surrounded by communities with poor economic backgrounds.

Durban University of Technology

ABOUT DUT

With approximately 23 000 students, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) is the first choice for higher education in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). It is located in the beautiful cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg (PMB). As a University of Technology, it prioritises the quality of teaching and learning by ensuring its academic staff possess the highest possible qualification that they can get.

The Durban University of Technology is a result of the merger in April 2002 of two prestigious technikons, ML Sultan and Technikon Natal. It was named the Durban Institute of Technology and later became the Durban University of Technology in line with the rest of the universities of technology.

DUT, a member of the International Association of Universities, is a multi-campus university of technology at the cutting edge of higher education, technological training and research. The university aspires to be a “preferred university for developing leadership in technology and productive citizenship”, and to “making knowledge useful”.

As a butterfly develops from a pupa, so have the students at our institution. From the moment they register as green freshers, to their capping at the hallowed graduation ceremony, our students undergo an intellectual evolution.

University of Johannesburg

About University of Johannesburg

Vibrant, multicultural and dynamic, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) shares the pace and energy of cosmopolitan Johannesburg, the city whose name it carries. Proudly South African, the university is alive down to its African roots, and well-prepared for its role in actualising the potential that higher education holds for the continent’s development.

The phenomenal success story of the University is one that has surprised critics and won over sceptics. Being an institution that prides itself in its accessible excellence, after only nine years UJ has established itself as an institution of global excellence and world-class stature.

In its first five years of existence, UJ doubled its accredited research output and increased its number of distinguished South African Research Chairs from none to seven. This remarkable achievement was reached well ahead of the target set for 2015. The 2010 research outcome was the result of UJ’s desire, during the initial period, to establish UJ as a thoroughly research-focused university.
UJ is the first and only African university admitted to the highly respected consortium of 28 research-intensive universities in the world, Universitas 21 – an important endorsement of the growing international stature of UJ.
UJ boasts world-class, internationally recognised academic programmes based on curricula informed by cutting-edge developments in both undergraduate and postgraduate education. UJ’s programmes, within its nine faculties, are designed to prepare students for the world of work and for global citizenship. The University has four campuses, namely the Auckland Park Bunting Road Campus; the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus; the Doornfontein Campus; and the Soweto Campus.
Based on the choices of UJ’s Orange Carpet First-Year Students – those with an APS score equal to and greater than 40 points – the flagship programmes include: Accounting; Electrical and Electronic/ Mechanical/ Civil/ Mining Engineering; LLB/ BA Law/ BCom Law; Mathematics/ Applied Mathematics; IT/ Computer Sciences; Human Physiology; Optometry; Finance; Psychology; and Teacher Education.
In order to make UJ’s teaching, research and innovation goals a reality, UJ has, over the past eight years, invested in excess of R2 billion into the upgrading and expansion of living and learning facilities on all of its campuses and into creating a safe and secure, world-class learning and research environment for both staff and students.
UJ also introduced handheld devices (a tablet or laptop) into first-year classrooms in 2014, in a bid to connect these young minds with the world of e-knowledge that they are growing into, and to transform their ability to contribute and compete.
UJ’s graduate success rate now stands at 83,4% and the overall annual graduate output is in excess of 11,400 students. The University’s First Year Experience Programme (FYE), an initiative offering academic skills reinforcement with an accent on students mentoring fellow students, is one of the support programmes that help ease the school-to-university transition. Almost 1,300 student tutors, selected from third-year level and up, act as an interface between students and teaching staff. UJ also introduced academic advisors in University residences and approved off-campus accommodation facilities. Under UJ’s Academic Excellence Programme, 250 student advisors are serving 2,000 first-year students in 25 residences.
Notable, too, is that UJ, with more than 49,500 students; 2,300 international students; 6,700 postgraduates and renowned academic staff, is an institution with an admirable graduation rate. UJ is home to 133 rated researchers, six of whom are A-rated, and has seven National Research Foundation Chairs. Additionally, it produces the largest number of black accountants of all accredited residential universities in the country.
While UJ pursues global excellence and stature, the University envisages being nationally responsive in a manner that only UJ can. In this regard, among South Africa’s six leading universities, only UJ successfully provides access to almost 2,000 first-year students who come from the poorest communities, providing them, where needed, with top-up NSFAS funding, bursaries and two healthy meals a day.

Soft Skills Training Program

In Tamil Nadu, passing 10th grade is absolutely required to be employable. The future for those who have not passed 10th grade is pretty grim. Mrs. Andal Domodran, former chair of the board of trustees, urged TNF Chennai chapter to initiate a project to improve the 10th grade passing rate through a program to motivate students.

TNF Soft Skills Training Program

TNF Soft Skills Training Program

TNF center chapter tried to develop a two-day program for the high schools of Tamil Nadu that would be similar to the career guidance program TNF started at Engineering College, Guindy, Chennai. But the issues for high school students were very different. The high school program had to be affordable, and TNF needed to be able to take the program to schools. Also, TNF needed to convince the heads of the schools that the program would deliver what it promised since the students would be away from regular classes for two days.

At first, TNF was not very successful in developing the program to meet all the requirements. But when a discussion of the training came up at a board of trustees meeting held at project site, Ponneri Library, M.N. Reguraj, Trustee, offered a solution. He is president of Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF), and he offered materials and trainers from the two-day soft skill training that were offered to all the students of NTTF Bangalore.

NTTF Bangalore is the biggest training center in South East Asia. NTTF has 23 Training Institutes throughout India, and annually trains about 8,000 students in various job skills. This training can be 3 months to 3 years. TNF accepted Mr. Reguraj’s offer. Under the informal agreement, NTTF provides two trainers and the training material. All the expenses related to training will be paid by TNF, including travel expenses, boarding and lodging as well as expenses at the training locations. The training would be brought to the students in their schools.

The two-day soft-skills program covers a number of specific areas on each day. On the first day the following subjects are covered.

  • Knowing the game – personal details, strengths and weaknesses
  • Analysis of weaknesses – how to convert weakness into strength
  • Communication
  • Concentration – listening, reading, understanding
  • Memory improvement
  • Presentation skill
  • Communication game

And in the second day these following subjects are covered,

  • Thought for the day
  • Time management
  • Health and personal hygiene
  • Civic sense
  • Confidence building
  • Memory improving exercise
  • How to prepare for the examination and overcome fear
  • Career planning – different courses and job opportunities
  • Feedback

As of May 2014, TNF has trained 1450 students in 33 schools in 7 districts. Fund availability at TNF center will determine the number schools the training will be offered. TNF has also started the process of “train the trainer program”, to eliminate the dependency on NTTF.
