South African Jockey Academy

The South African Jockey Academy is the only institution in South Africa that offers youth an academic and practical apprentice programme to qualify as professional jockeys.

Well known and highly acclaimed worldwide this jockey academy is situated in Summerveld, a state of the art horse training facility outside of Durban, that is run by Gold Circle and boasts a rich history.

Established in 1958 the South African Jockey Academy has grown from strength to strength in producing leading jockeys, many of whom have gone on to receive top honours internationally.

The South African Jockey Academy has satellite campuses in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. There is also an academy based in Gauteng that is funded and administered by The Racing Trust.

Apprentices begin their initial training in at the Academy situated at Summerveld near Durban and are fed through to the other three training centres once they competent at riding in races.

Many international racing clubs and jurisdictions look to SAJA for training of their apprentices as our quality of training is rated as one of the best in the world.

Citrus Academy

The Citrus Academy develops and makes available learning media and programmes in order to assist learning providers and growers with learning delivery, and to meet identified learning needs that are not otherwise catered for. In this section you can download and request various learning tools.

Learning media include audio-visual learning media and citrus production learning material.

Learning programmes are developed in response to an identified need in the industry, and are usually tailor-made in terms of content and delivery mode to meet the needs of particular target groups.

The development of learning tools is funded through grants and grower levies, and wherever possible the tools are made available for free to citrus growers, universities, schools and colleges, and offered for sale to other parties.

Kronendal Music Academy

In 2007 was formed to address the ongoing lack of cultural stimulation which faces the youth and the community as a whole in Hout Bay. KMA’s main focus has always been to provide music education in as many forms and styles as possible to Hout Bay’s under-privileged and economically challenged communities, while fostering a platform from which to initiate racial and social interaction and integration amongst the three very distinct communities in the area:

The affluent ‘valley’ residents

While there are many professionals from various walks of life involved in the administration, funding and development of the Academy, the nature of our specific organisation is that it requires a creative and innovative approach in order to secure a viable future which helps to realise the vision of the KMA family.

Starting from scratch, KMA initiated individual music tuition, group activities, ensembles, workshops and community events. Our activities have successfully united members from the different areas in Hout Bay and the Academy has become synonymous with integration development.

Our teachers specialize in double bass, cello, violin, classical guitar, folk/rock and jazz guitar, piano, vocal training, recorder, drum kit, flute, clarinet and saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone and euphonium. At any given time we have a minimum of 120 learners involved in either individual, or ensembles and group lessons on a weekly basis.

The methodology is designed to be fluid and adapts to the needs of the learners and logistical challenges of the community at large. We have managed to maintain our initial activities and develop to a point where we are also currently offering various workshops, weekly community singing evenings and regular performances. We are also dedicated to the holistic development of our pupils, focusing on a different “non-music” theme for each term: e.g. gardening, swimming, group counselling etc.

This is where we stand at the moment, but as adequate funding is accumulated we aim to provide a much wider range of platforms for musical development, integration, exploration and expression.

In 2012 we moved into a beautiful Cape Dutch home, “Oakburn”, dating back to 1847, where all our operations are based. As we continue to grow, however, one of our focus points is to create a Performance Arts Centre for Hout Bay, containing everything from practise rooms and recording facilities to versatile performance spaces and, most importantly, a theatre.

Raymond Ackerman Academy

The Raymond Ackerman Academy is a post-matric level academy that offers an inspiring and innovative six month, full time programme in entrepreneurial development.

The course aims at empowering young people on their entrepreneurial journey while developing their business and life skills.
